Your orthodontist or dentist may recommend the need for orthognathic (jaw) surgery. There are multiple types of jaw surgeries used for correction of the jaw when the teeth or bite do not fit together properly. Sometimes, the upper and lower jaws do not grow at the same rate, thus causing the classic "overbite" or "under bite". Discrepancies in the formation of the jaw can lead to problems with speech, mouth breathing, chewing, and facial appearance concerns.
In this situation, your orthodontist, dentist and Dr. Blazic work collaboratively early on in your orthodontic treatment to discuss the advantages of an orthognathic procedure right for you. X-rays, photographs and models of your jaw and teeth will be used by your doctors to determine if orthognathic surgery is necessary to achieve a more functional bite, proper chewing, and facial symmetry.
Generally, your orthodontist will straighten your teeth with braces first. Orthognathic surgery will be performed afterwards by Dr. Blazic to move the upper and lower jaws into the optimum position, resulting in a functional bite and balanced facial appearance.
Orthognathic surgery is performed in the hospital under a general anesthetic. The surgery is usually performed from the inside of the mouth and rigid fixation is accomplished with plates and screws, to hold the jaws in correct position. Your jaws are typically not "wired" together, allowing for a more pleasant and rapid recovery. Most patients are discharged from the hospital one or two after surgery.
